A noticeable improvement in indoor air quality should not disappear without a reason. If a room smells fresher for a few days after cleaning, filtering, or increasing ventilation and then gradually returns to its old state, the change often points to a break in the maintenance chain—not proof that the original solution “stopped working.”
The useful question is not simply whether the air feels worse. It is what changed over time: airflow, filter condition, moisture control, the pollutant source, or the reliability of the reading.
The strongest signs that maintenance has slipped

The improvement lasts for less time after each cleaning
A room that improves briefly after dusting, vacuuming, changing a filter, or removing an odor source may have a source that is being replenished faster than it is being controlled. A low-cost air-quality monitor is most useful for observing trends under consistent conditions. A maintenance-gap check you can do safely

Work from the source outward. This avoids buying a new device before confirming that the existing system can do its job.

Leave electrical work, refrigerant handling, combustion-system inspection, and invasive duct or mold work to appropriately qualified professionals. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the area and follow local emergency guidance rather than troubleshooting the HVAC system yourself.
