Why Some Air Fresheners Create More Air Quality Issues Than They Solve
A room that smells fresher is not necessarily cleaner. In a pet home, an air freshener can cover an odor while adding volatile chemicals—or, with a burning candle, particles—to the air. The more useful first step is to locate and remove the odor source, then use ventilation and routine upkeep to support indoor air quality.
A survey of scented consumer products, including air fresheners, found emissions of more than 100 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as described in this review of scented-product VOC emissions. That does not mean every fragranced product creates the same exposure or that a pleasant scent is inherently dangerous. It does mean scent alone is not a reliable sign that an air-quality problem has been solved.
Masking an Odor is Not the Same as Removing It
Pet odors can have a physical source, including fur oils, saliva, or urine residue in porous materials. Fragrance may make that source less noticeable without removing it.
VOCs can enter room air as they evaporate from volatile household products. Some fragrance ingredients can also participate in chemical reactions. For example, limonene—a citrus-scent VOC—can react with ozone in air and form secondary pollutants, including formaldehyde.
For pet households, the practical distinction is simple:
- Odor masking: Adds a stronger or more pleasant scent while the original source may remain.
- Source control: Removes or reduces the material causing the odor in the first place.
Source control is generally the most effective indoor-air strategy. If the odor returns as soon as fragrance fades, inspect the room rather than add another scented layer.
Why Plug-Ins, “Natural” Labels, and Candles Deserve a Second Look

Different products add substances to indoor air in different ways. A few common pet-home choices deserve particular caution.
- Plug-ins: Many plug-in air fresheners emit dozens of VOCs, including some products labeled “unscented” or “natural.”
- “Natural,” “green,” and essential-oil claims: These labels are not a shortcut for judging emissions. Products marketed as natural, non-toxic, or green can still emit VOCs, including compounds derived from essential oils.
- Candles: Burning candles releases soot and fine particles, including candles made from soy or beeswax. Added dyes and fragrances can also contribute to indoor pollution.

The takeaway is that routine fragrance should not become the default response to a recurring pet odor.
Start with a Pet-Odor Source Check

Before using fragrance, check likely odor reservoirs in the space.

Check for urine residue. Pet-urine odor can recur when odor-causing compounds remain in carpet, upholstery, fabric, or similar porous materials.

Clean the residue, not just the air around it. For urine, feces, or vomit residues, enzyme cleaners are intended to break down organic compounds rather than merely mask their smell.

Avoid creating a repeat-soiling cue. Ammonia-based cleaners may encourage a pet to return to the same stained spot because ammonia is a component of urine.

Be careful with high heat on urine-stained carpet and upholstery. High heat from steam cleaning can set urine stains and odors into carpet fibers and upholstery.
This approach is about matching the action to the problem: remove residue from the material holding it rather than repeatedly scenting the room.
Use Ventilation and Equipment Upkeep as Support
After source cleaning, ventilation and equipment upkeep can support a source-first routine.
- Ventilate when possible.
- Keep indoor humidity in the recommended 30% to 50% range.
- Change or clean air-cleaning filters according to the equipment’s package instructions.
These measures support a source-first routine; they do not replace cleaning a recurring odor source.
It also helps to separate the remaining concern into categories. Pet dander is an asthma trigger found in homes. Odor-causing chemicals are another concern. A fragrance product can make a room smell different while the original odor source remains.
Do Not Substitute an Ozone Generator for an Air Freshener

Devices sold as ozone-generating air cleaners intentionally produce ozone. Archived EPA guidance explains that inhaled ozone can damage the lungs and that relatively low amounts can cause coughing, throat irritation, chest pain, and shortness of breath; it also states that no federal agency had approved these devices for occupied spaces in that guidance. Ozone is also a poor shortcut for pet-odor control. At concentrations below health standards, it is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals. It does not remove airborne particles and can react with chemicals already present to create additional pollutants, including formaldehyde and ultrafine particles, according to the California Air Resources Board’s ozone-generator guidance.
For an occupied pet home, return to the simpler sequence: find the source, clean it, ventilate, and maintain equipment according to its instructions.
If an odor remains after source cleaning and ventilation, assess whether the remaining issue is residue, particles, odor-causing chemicals, or a combination. Maintain any air-cleaning equipment as instructed, and seek medical or veterinary input if symptoms occur.
