A filterless cat fountain keeps used water out of the clean drinking path by routing water exposed in the drinking area to a separate wastewater section instead of returning it to the clean supply. The clean and used water paths stay separate

The mechanism is easier to picture as two routes rather than one circulating loop.

Fresh water begins in the clean-water tank. A pump or dispensing mechanism moves some of it to the drinking area. After the cat drinks, water left in that exposed area is directed away from the clean supply and into a used-water section. The clean tank therefore holds water that has not passed through the drinking area, while the wastewater section collects water that has.

That physical split is the key difference. A filter-based fountain may send water through a filter and back into the same reservoir.
